If the thought of a bygone safari era, stirs something deep within your soul and adventure and getting to the heart of the bush excites you, the wilderness tented safari camp is an experience second to none.
Situated in the heart of Big 5 country on a concession within the Kruger Park, this is the perfect spot to track elephant and rhino on foot. There are guided walks in the crisp, early mornings and hazy afternoons and, as evening draws closer, a night drive in an open vehicle adds the final touch to your bush experience.
With a minimum of a 2 night stay and set days for arrival and departures, you and your fellow guests may arrive as strangers, but in the true spirit of Africa, you’ll leave having shared incredible wildlife adventures.
Nestled in an Acacia Knobthorn thicket, the African wilderness may be right on your doorstep, but step inside your perfectly appointed en-suite tent, and you’ll find all the creature comforts you’d find at home – including delightfully hot, running water.
Your accommodation is also in keeping with the ethics of this camp – ‘tread lightly on the land’ – and as a result, when it was built, no trees were cut down, no concrete was used and generators are used for power.
When the weather is good, we’ll walk to the most unusual accommodation in the Park – an elevated wooden platform – where we’ll sleep under the stars.
Late afternoon will see us leaving camp, carrying a lightweight rucksack containing nothing more than a change of clothing and refreshments for the walk.
We like to call it natural living at its finest.
On arrival we’ll hang mosquito nets and prepare our beds (guests are encouraged to be part of every aspect of this elite, interactive bush experience) before enjoying sundowners on a platform overlooking a waterhole, followed by a delicious dinner and finally… sleep.
Note: If the first guests to reserve their trail request the Sleep Out, all subsequent reservations will be required to participate.
A typical day
It’s tradition in the bush to start your day with a homemade rusk (similar to biscotti) and a cup of steaming coffee. It’s not a leisurely affair though. With rhino and elephant tracks to be followed, there’s no time to waste!
A maximum of 8 of us will head out with our highly experienced, qualified and armed guides, who within minutes will share their incredible wealth of bush knowledge. From the identification of animals, trees, grasses, insects and birds, to the medicinal uses of plants, folklore and basic tracking and survival skills, you’ll find every step intriguing.
The length and duration of the walk will depend on the fitness of the group, but generally, we return to camp to enjoy a leisurely lunch under the shade of the acacia trees mid to late morning.
After high tea, we’ll set out for a late afternoon walking safari or game drive, before watching the sun soundlessly disappear over a distant horizon in a blaze of red, orange and gold.
A campfire and dinner awaits, as does a night of dreams, inspired by an incredible day.
